8 TIPS: HANGING A GALLERY WALL AT HOME
1. MIX AND MATCH FOR ECLECTIC HEAVEN
A gallery wall is the place to really show off your personal style, so don't get hung up on matching frames, sizes and sticking to one type of art. Mix and match prints, originals, photographs and collected objects to keep things interesting.
2. PICK YOUR SPOT WISELY
Do you want your gallery to be a secret that’s discovered? As you walk up the stairs maybe or in the downstairs loo? Or is this going to be the main feature above the sofa or create convocation in the dining room? Think about the works you plan to use, the size and style. Do you need space to stand back and look at them?
If it’s hanging above a piece of furniture, aim for the bottom of the lowest picture to sit 4-8” above the top of you furniture. If your gallery is hanging on an empty wall, try to have the bottom of the collection hang around 1/3 (in height) from the floor.
3. PICK A PICTURE AS A STARTING POINT
If your chosen spot has a nice clear space then select a large powerful piece for the centre and compose the other frames outwards. If you’re working around a piece of furniture or designing it up a stair well then start with a piece in the bottom corner and work on from there.
If order and straight lines are more your style then use the same frame colour, art size and style of work. If you have an artist or photographer you love, try hanging a series of their prints together for affordable impact.
4. TEST THE GALLERY WALL ON THE FLOOR
There is nothing worse than going to all that effort and you wish you’d swapped things around! Lay it all out and you can play until your hearts content. Then stand on something high and imagine it on the wall. You could also take a photo on your phone and hold that up to the wall space to get a rough idea.
5. PICK A COLOUR SCHEME
Although I’ve said mix and match until your hearts content it still needs to ‘hang together’ for it to work and not look jumbled. Consider your own rooms colour scheme and look at the colour wheel for the rooms opposite colours. If you have a deep blue room for example a painting with bright orange in it will really pop!
7. FIND YOUR ‘TOOL’ FOR PRECISION SPACING
With a miss match of images, frames and sizes the spacing between these has to be exact each time. This is the difference between it looking like stand out design or dodgy DIY. For speed, use a book spine or something similar with the desired width rather than measuring each time.
8. COMMAND THE ‘COMMAND STRIPS’
If your renting or have crumbling victorian walls like I discovered then those little sticky strips are a fantastic solution. It really is stick and go. The great thing about a gallery wall is that you can switch things up anytime, showing off different artwork and keeping your home fresh.
